I’m João Guilherme Matos, a Portuguese chess player and Grade 1 certified coach from Aveiro, Portugal. You can find me streaming on Twitch and making videos for YouTube.
Most players don’t need another opening trick. They need a clear plan — and a coach who turns every lesson into progress.
I work with both children — and their parents — and adults who are looking to improve their game regardless of their current level.
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, every chess class plan is built around your needs and tailored to the way you think.

Lessons, formats and what to expect before your first session. If your question isn’t here, just ask.
Both. Online lessons run over video call with a shared board and live analysis; in-person sessions happen in Aveiro. The structure is the same either way.
Beginners through to advanced club players — children, with their parents in the loop, and adults. Every plan is built around your current level and the way you think.
We talk about your goals and look at a few of your recent games. From there I set out what we should work on first — openings, calculation, endings or tournament preparation. You don’t need to prepare anything.
A standard lesson runs about an hour. Most players meet weekly or fortnightly, but the format and frequency are agreed after the first session, once I know what you need.
A board helps, but an account on Lichess or Chess.com is enough. You’ll need a stable connection and a quiet space; screen sharing works both ways, so I can follow your thinking move by move.
Yes. I coach club and school squads, prepare teams for competitions and host or commentate chess broadcasts — including work for RTP Arena. Tell me what you have in mind through the contact form.
Whether you want to start having chess lessons or talk about another project — send me a message and I’ll reply as soon as possible.
